Safety and Wholeness

Come to the Safety and Wholeness Committee listening session

The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners' Safety and Wholeness Committee invites you to a community listening session from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Patterson High School (100 Kane St, Baltimore, MD 21224). Speak directly with the committee about your ideas on improving school safety and student well-being. Learn how the committee is actively addressing safety concerns and find ways you can get involved in this important work.

Light refreshments will be served.

Every day, literacy coaches across Baltimore City Schools help teachers improve student reading and writing. Since joining nearly all City Schools, they have focused on strengthening students' literacy skills.

Students prep for annual Battle of the Books

City Schools students are ready to face off in the second annual Battle of the Books competition on Friday, April 25 at Morgan State University. Fourth and fifth grade teams from 34 schools will test their knowledge of 10 books through a fast-paced, quiz-style showdown—all to celebrate reading and literacy.

McDaniel College awards five Baltimore City Public School students with full tuition scholarships

Five City Schools seniors have been awarded full-tuition scholarships to McDaniel College through a partnership with the CollegeBound Foundation.

McDaniel surprised the students with in-person visits at their schools:

  • Malver Canales, Frederick Douglass High School

  • Ace Foly Ehke, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute

  • Skye Hammond, Western High School

  • Zoe Saunders, Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women

  • Jazzy Blessett, Patterson High School

Elementary and Middle School students receive free hair cuts in partnerships with City Schools Police and Digital Harbor

Chief Shorter, Corporal Covington, and City Schools police officers partnered with the barber program at Digital Harbor High School to provide haircuts to elementary and middle schoolers from across the city. As Chief Shorter says, “If you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good you come to school and you want to learn.” Shoutout to staff barber Bernard Johnson, and student barber Isaiah (Digital Harbor, class of 2025) for making sure these young men head into Spring Break looking fresh!
